When considering how a car runs, a lot of people think about the major components, like the engine, the alternator or the battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are many smaller parts that are necessary for a vehicle to work correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing belt is one of them. It surrounds various items and is responsible for making sure the crankshaft and camshaft are in the right timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, this piece goes bad and needs to be replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preventing future problems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Replacing drive belts is one way to prevent future problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How often you need to replace them depends on the manufacturer\u2019s recommendation. Most timing belts should be changed around 100,000 miles, but some are 60,000 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new one may also be needed if there\u2019s cracking or a running condition where it jumps time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signs the timing belt is going bad<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You aren\u2019t going to be noticing wear on the timing belt, because it is covered up by parts. Drive belts are normally replaced on a mileage basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a few symptoms can clue you in that the timing belt is going bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engine misfires are one of them. If the engine isn\u2019t in perfect time, then it won\u2019t fire correctly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the belt is too far out of timing, it causes internal damage to the engine because parts can start hitting each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vehicle may also refuse to start, because the timing components aren\u2019t spinning and the engine isn\u2019t creating compression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may also notice noise caused by the timing components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you notice any of these indicators, you should reach out to a mechanic or an auto repair shop as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replacing the timing belt<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You shouldn\u2019t put off replacing the timing belt due to maintenance or age, because if it breaks you have a chance of causing internal engine damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it\u2019s not just the drive belt you should take care of. A lot of times, it will drive the water pump. There are also idler pulleys the belt is around that can also wear out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When replacing the timing belt, we also replace these other components. If you replace the belt and don\u2019t change the parts tied to it, you will likely have a problem with them soon after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other than normal wear and tear, drive belts can go bad if there\u2019s an oil leak. Oil leaks, if they aren\u2019t addressed, may cause the belt to become weaker or break<\/strong><\/a>, resulting in damage to the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Timing belts and timing chains<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not all vehicles have timing belts, they either have a timing belt while others have a timing chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nowadays, more cars have timing chains than belts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These two parts have the same function, but there are some differences. Timing chains are oil lubricated. Timing belts aren\u2019t, and it\u2019s actually bad if oil gets on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another difference is that timing chains have guide rails, while timing belts just have tensioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether your vehicle has a belt or a chain, make sure it\u2019s inspected regularly and replaced when it has become worn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
