A couple of months ago, I stopped by a gas station while I was on my way to work. When I restarted my Volkswagen Beetle, the engine didn\u2019t turn over. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Ironically, this was the same gas station I was at when my check engine light started flashing<\/strong><\/a> in November.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried a few more times. It wouldn\u2019t start, and all I heard was silence and \u2014 several seconds later \u2014 a \u201cclick \u2026 click \u2026 click.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of the dashboard lights did come on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since my battery had been replaced within the past few years, and I hadn\u2019t left any lights on or electronics plugged in, I ruled out the battery. I called HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire and spoke with them about the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The General Manager offered to drive down to the gas station, which is in Fredericksburg, and help. A friend of mine who lives closer came by and jumped my car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After she arrived, we attempted to jump start my car multiple times and were unsuccessful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I spoke to the General Manager again who gave some suggestions. He asked me to try jump starting my car again. The first attempt \u2014 nothing. The second time \u2014 nothing. The third \u2014 my car came back to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I brought my car by HomeTowne Auto Repair and learned that I needed a new starter, which is responsible for starting the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The starter has a gear \u2014 called a bindix \u2014 that starts the flywheel by shooting out and spinning quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A clicking sound is one of the <\/strong>signs that it\u2019s going bad<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, a starter will stop working without showing any symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re in the same boat I was in, your best bet is to keep trying to jump start your car and check the battery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you turn it over three or four times, your starter may have a flat spot and get started one time. After that, it shouldn\u2019t be trusted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it still won\u2019t start after you\u2019ve tried jumping it, you will probably need to have it towed to a mechanic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
