With the amount of time we spend traveling, we might as well feel comfortable while embarking on those adventures. Plus, it can help the miles melt away for drivers and their passengers.

This is possible when you’re using a high quality tire, like the Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ All Season 2 Tire.

In Tires & Wheels by HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire

Are you in the market for a high quality tire with a lower price point?

The BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport Tire may be the right fit for your vehicle.

It is very similar to the Michelin Defender Tire, Michelin’s top tire. But don’t let that be the only reason that convinces you to consider this option.

An all-season tire, the BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport Tire offers quite a few benefits that make it a favorite among many drivers.

Improved traction and great grip

Traveling in the rain or snow can be challenging and a bit stressful. The BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport Tire is a great choice to have on your side in these conditions.

Made up of locking 3-D Active Sipe Technology, it gives you improved traction that is especially helpful when you’re driving through wet or snowy weather. Its siping helps push away water.

The tire’s excellent grip is another perk that can’t be ignored. This grip, which is possible because of silica-infused compounds, can be counted on all year long.

BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport Tire: Reliable and comfortable

You don’t just want a tire that can be trusted in inclement weather. It’s also important that the one you choose for your vehicle is reliable when going around corners or traveling at higher speeds. (If you live or work in Northern Virginia, you know that high speeds are a norm on major roads and highways.)

Not only does this BFGoodrich option meet those needs, it does so while also providing a comfortable ride. This can be attributed to its sidewall stabilizer. Having that trait in a tire can help make longer trips more pleasant.

A quiet ride that’s long lasting

The last thing you want to hear while commuting or running errands is a noisy tire. That’s one problem you don’t need to be concerned about when using the BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport Tire.

And this quiet ride is one you can enjoy for many miles, as it is backed by a 60,000 to 70,000 mile tread life.

Both of these qualities are the result of Computer Optimized Footprint.

How well this tire steers is another benefit that fans have noticed. The steering response is consistent, due to the Continuous Center Rib.

The BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport Tire is one that drivers shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss.

Sizes are available for different types of vehicles, including trucks, SUVs and smaller cars.

Replacing tires on a BMW

In Tires & Wheels by HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire

A BMW I8 recently received a couple of new tires.

The car was brought to HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire after its Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light turned on.

The tread depth of the BMW’s rear tires was below 2/32 of an inch, which is the minimum specification for the Virginia Safety Inspection.

When you should be replacing tires

A manufacturer might suggest that you get new tires when the tread depth reaches 3/32 of an inch to 5/32 of an inch.

If you drive a BMW and are in need of tire repair services, we may be able to repair them, depending on the injury and its location.

Learn about when a tire is repairable.

HomeTowne Auto Repair doesn’t just repair tires. We also sell tires, including Michelin, BFGoodrich and Uniroyal.

Tire installation process

Before replacing tires on a vehicle, our technicians make sure that they have the correct tires and that they don’t have any punctures.

Then, they use a tire machine to separate the tire from the rim.

Tire paste is used to prevent a tire from tearing as it goes on or comes off the rim.

After that, our technicians balance the tires, place them on the vehicle, and twerk them to the correct specification.

When getting new tires, it’s a good idea to have a wheel alignment performed. We also suggest road hazard warranty for the tires.

Ripped CV Boots found during Virginia Safety Inspection

In Tires & Wheels by HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire

Written by Erin Flynn

This week, I decided to have the oil changed for my Volkswagen Beetle at HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire.

Since it was already going to be in the shop, I also asked them to do a Virginia Safety Inspection.

While they were conducting the inspection, they discovered that the Constant-Velocity (CV) Boots have ripped.

What are CV boots?

The CV Boot is part of the CV Axle, and it holds in grease for the CV Joint. The CV Axle powers the wheels from the transmission.

If a vehicle loses the grease, it will cause more metal on metal friction overtime. This creates more heat and shortens the CV Joint’s shelf life.

If properly maintained, CV Boots can last 20 years. However, as soon as you get any type of oil or air mixture, it’s really bad for the rubber and causes the rubber to crack and break.

I wouldn’t have known about the CV Boots being ripped if they hadn’t performed a Virginia Safety Inspection. Depending on where you go, that sort of problem can be missed during a regular oil change.

Tire shop compared to discount tire place

In Tires & Wheels by HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire

HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire in Woodbridge is a Michelin, BFGoodrich and Uniroyal tire dealer.

We do sell other tires, depending on the needs of the customer and what kind of vehicle they have.

As a tire shop, we can repair tires, as well. We use a patch plug from the inside, according to the Tire Industry Association guidelines.

Doing a patch plug from the inside allows you to see if there is other tire damage on the inside that you wouldn’t be able to see if you used a string plug.

We have employees who have completed training on tires.

Other tire shop services

A tire shop is also able to check your vehicle’s wheel alignment and make any needed adjustments.

You should get an alignment when you’re getting tires. This helps with the longevity of the tires, so they don’t wear out too quickly because of a suspension or steering component  problem.

Some of the discount tire places only put on tires, they don’t perform alignments and they may not necessarily do a patch plug from the inside.

HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire also recommends road hazard warranty on the tires. Therefore, if you have a problem with your tire — like, if you hit a curb or something damages the tire’s sidewall — it would be covered. At discount tire places, they may not offer that.

A lot of the time, the manufacturer’s warranty doesn’t cover items that puncture the tire while driving on the road.

When and how to check your vehicle’s tire pressure

In Tires & Wheels by HomeTowne Auto Repair & Tire

It’s important to stay safe when behind the wheel.

Checking your tire pressure is one way you can protect yourself. It can also prevent your vehicle’s tires from wearing out too quickly.

Having your own tire pressure gauge is a good idea. Not every gas station pump is calibrated, and they can’t be trusted all the time.

Below is more information you should know about when and how to check the pressure.

When should I check my tire pressure?

You should check your air pressure daily. Most newer vehicles are equipped with tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which will give you a signal on your dashboard when your pressure is low.

If your vehicle isn’t equipped with this, there are some indicators you can look out for. These include a tire’s sidewalls being wider at the bottom and poor handling.

Under Inflated tires will promote outer tire edge wear. Overinflated tires are just as dangerous, as they can wear out the center of a tire.

What are the steps to checking the pressure?

Verifying the correct pressure is the first step in checking your tire pressure. You can find it on the door jam on the driver’s side of the vehicle or on the sidewall of the tire.

The next step is removing the valve stem cap and using a tire pressure gauge to measure it. A basic tire gauge will have a stem that pops out and gives you a reading. You may also use a digital gauge, which will give you a digital number.

It’s important to double check the pressure to make sure you don’t have a false reading.

After checking your tire pressure, make sure to replace the valve stem cap. This can prevent corrosion of the valve stem and TPMS sensor, and help you avoid a costly repair.
